What Is the Difference Between Coffins and Caskets?

Introduction

When it comes to burial containers, the terms coffin and casket are often used interchangeably, but there are some key differences between the two.

What Is the Difference Between Coffins and Caskets?

The main difference is that coffins are six-sided and tapered, while caskets are rectangular and larger in size.

Typically, coffins have simpler craftsmanship, while caskets offer more detailed engraving, better fabrics and cushioning, and sometimes an adjustable bed for better positioning.

Key Differences:

  • Shape

Coffins are tapered, caskets are rectangular.
  • Craftsmanship & functionality:

Caskets typically can feature more detailed craftsmanship, higher-quality materials, and added features like an adjustable bed.
  • Popularity:

Caskets are more common in the U.S., while coffins are more commonly used in New Zealand.

Which Should You Pick?

When choosing between a casket or coffin, consider your personal preferences, religious or cultural customs, and any budgetary constraints. While caskets and coffins both serve the purpose of holding the deceased for burial, shape and design differences do create functional limitations.

If you plan to have an open casket ceremony, you'll typically be choosing either a coffin with a fully removable one-piece lid or a split-lid coffin. In New Zealand, regardless of whether the ceremony features an open casket, coffins with fully removable lids are the most common choice, in Pākehā and Māori funerals alike. In an open casket funeral, choosing a coffin — or casket — with a split-lid can mean significant savings, however. This is because it is simpler and much more cost effective for the embalmer to prepare only the top half of the body.

When choosing between a split-lid casket and a split-lid coffin for an open casket ceremony, keep in mind that split-lid caskets are considered the more high-end option, as they're more spacious and feature more elaborate interior detail and fabrics.
